Barton County has two separate types of burning bans.  One is, simply put, an tool to be used during emergencies.  It allows the County Commission, through the adoption of a Resolution, to ban all burning in the County.  This protects lives, property and resources when the conditions are too dry for burning of any sort to be safe.  The second method, burn permitting, provides the government a system for controlling burns.  Although burning under these conditions is controlled by area fire departments, the Communications Department coordinates the effort.

Burning Ban in Effect thru 12 Noon, March 30, 2009

On March 23, 2009 the Barton County Commission instated Resolution 2009-13 declaring a state of local disaster emergency.  This resolution states that due to extremely dry weather conditions an extreme fire hazard exists in Barton County.  Effective at 12:00 p.m. (Noon) on March 23, 2009, open campfires and fires are prohibited.  Burning of fence rows, fields, wildlands, ravines, trash and debris may be done upon issuance of a written permit by the Fire Chief having jurisdiction of the area where the burning is to take place.

The resolution will be in effect until March 30, 2009, 11:59 a.m.  A continuance of the ban will be considered at the Barton County Commission meeting at 9:00 a.m. on March 30, 2009.  If it is continued, 911 Communications will simulcast that information.
